What is metallic epoxy?

Metallic epoxy is an epoxy floor coating with metallic pigments, worked by hand into a seamless, liquid or marbled finish. In Johor Bahru, IFS Metallic Epoxy is laid over Rayson PrimeBond E20 primer by a Rayson-authorised applicator, after the colour and pattern are chosen on a sample board.

Before you choose

Is a metallic epoxy floor slippery?

A glossy finish can be slippery when wet, like any smooth floor. IFS metallic finishes also come matte or velvety, and IFS Epoxy Flake Lining is slip-resistant; for entrances and wet zones the applicator recommends the finish on the sample.

In dry rooms a gloss finish is easy to mop and shows the metallic effect best. Where water comes in from outside, a mat and a satin or flake finish keep the floor safe.

Does metallic epoxy scratch or turn yellow?

Any epoxy floor scratches under grit and dragged furniture, and epoxy can yellow where strong sunlight falls on it. Felt pads, a mat at the door and the right clear coat where daylight reaches the floor keep it looking new.

The applicator checks where the sun falls at the site visit and specifies the clear coat the system calls for there. Grit is the usual cause of fine scratches, so it is swept away rather than ground in.

Can metallic epoxy go over my tiles?

Over tiles that are firmly bonded, yes, with the grout lines filled and a bonding primer. The applicator taps every tile first; a hollow tile is removed.

Unfilled grout lines show through a thin coat as a grid, so they are filled and the floor primed before the metallic layers. Door clearances are checked too, though the build-up is thin.

Metallic epoxy or flake epoxy?

Metallic epoxy gives a flowing, liquid or marbled look; flake epoxy scatters coloured flakes for a speckled finish with more grip. Both are IFS finishes over Rayson primer, and both are chosen on a sample board.

Living rooms, showrooms and feature floors tend to suit metallic; garages, kitchens, utility rooms and wet zones tend to suit flake, which hides dirt and grips better.

A first guide. The applicator confirms the right finish for your room on site.

What you see

The signs

  • A living room, showroom or café floor you want seamless and eye-catching
  • Tiles or an old coating you would rather cover than hack
  • A garage or shop floor that should look premium and still mop clean
  • A countertop or feature surface in the same finish as the floor
Why it happens

The usual causes

  • A metallic coat laid over a damp or dusty slab that later bubbles or peels
  • A colour chosen from a photo, without a sample in the real light of the room
  • A thin build-up that scratches through in the first year
How the job runs

From three photos to a finished job

  1. Sample first

Colour, effect and sheen chosen on a sample board and checked in the light of your room, because metallic finishes change with the light.

  2. Prepare and prime

Grinding, crack and joint repair and a moisture check, then Rayson PrimeBond E20 primer.

  3. Lay the IFS finish

The coats of the IFS metallic or flake system, worked by hand to the pattern on the sample, then the clear coat the system specifies.

  4. Cure and hand over

Foot traffic and furniture follow the cure times on the data sheets; the cleaning regime is explained at handover.

What to send

Three photos are enough for a first quotation

  1. The floor, wide
  2. The surface close: tile, concrete or old coating
  3. A reference photo of the look you want

What it costs

What does epoxy flake or metallic epoxy cost in Johor Bahru?

Per square foot, quoted after inspection. Five things decide it: the area, the state of the floor (grinding, cracks and moisture), tiles to fill and prime, metallic or flake and the pattern, and the clear coat where daylight falls. Repairs to the floor are priced as their own step. Rayson publishes no price list.

Who stands behind the job

  • Rayson is not the installer and is not a party to the installation contract. Two warranties, two companies.
  • IFS supplies the decorative finish under its own terms; the combined build-up is confirmed on a sample board first. About the partner range

The Rayson difference

An installer buys whatever is on the shelf. A Rayson-authorised applicator installs what Rayson makes.

01

The maker writes the specification

The system is specified by the company that makes the material, and installed by an independent applicator Rayson has authorised, not chosen from whatever a supplier had on the shelf that week.

02

A data sheet for every layer

Every Rayson material on your floor or roof has a published technical data sheet. You can read what went in, and so can your consultant.

03

Two warranties, two companies

Rayson warrants the material as its maker. The authorised applicator, an independent company that contracts with you, warrants the workmanship. Each warranty is issued by the company responsible for it.

04

Same materials on both sides of the Causeway

The products, data sheets and application methods are the ones Rayson publishes in Singapore. Nothing is rebadged for Malaysia.

05

Materials direct, for your own crew

Contractors and facility teams buy the same materials direct from the maker, with application guidance. The applicator is there when you want the job done for you.

The practical details

Questions people ask

Can flake lining go in a bathroom?

As a finish on walls and floors, yes, and IFS’s own photos show it in bathrooms. It is not a waterproofing membrane: the waterproofing under a bathroom floor is checked first, and where it is needed the applicator confirms the membrane and the combined build-up on a sample board.

Whose product is it?

The metallic and flake finishes are IFS products (Industrial Floor & Systems Pte. Ltd) and carry IFS’s own terms. The primer under them is Rayson PrimeBond E20, with a published data sheet, and the combined build-up is confirmed on a sample board before your job.

How long does a metallic floor take?

Several working days: the preparation and primer, the base coat, the metallic or flake coat and the clear coat each cure in turn, and furniture goes back after the cure time on the data sheet. The applicator sets out the programme in the quotation.

Who gives the warranty?

Rayson warrants its primer as the maker; IFS’s terms cover the finish; the Rayson-authorised applicator warrants the workmanship. All three are written into the quotation.
