What flooring does a pharmaceutical plant need?

A seamless floor that is smooth, free from cracks and open joints and easy to clean and disinfect. Rayson specifies LevelShield SL120 self-levelling epoxy, listed for pharmaceutical facilities and clean rooms, with UraForce WB58 on walls, StaticGuard CX90 where electronics are assembled and PurScreed PC70 in washdown rooms.

Before you choose

What does GMP ask of a floor?

The PIC/S guide, which NPRA inspects against, asks that where starting materials, packaging or products are exposed, walls, floors and ceilings be smooth, free from cracks and open joints, shed no particles and allow easy, effective cleaning and, if necessary, disinfection.

A seamless self-levelling floor with coved edges answers the floor’s part. The grade of the room is decided by its design, its air handling and its cleaning regime, which stay with your engineers and your quality team.

Which floor for a clean room?

LevelShield SL120: solvent-free, self-smoothing and seamless, and its data sheet lists pharmaceutical facilities and clean rooms. Rayson publishes no particle-emission certificate for the floor, so the room’s grade stays the cleanroom designer’s and the plant’s to qualify.

What the floor gives the room is a sealed, joint-free surface that cleans and disinfects; the specification follows the designer’s requirements for each room.

What about device assembly with electronics?

Where a device carries electronics, its assembly area usually sits inside an ESD programme. StaticGuard CX90 is conductive through its body, 10⁴ to 10⁶ ohms on average, laid at 1.0 to 1.5 mm over earthing points and tested after cure; its data sheet lists pharmaceutical facilities.

Penang made about 73% of Malaysia’s exports of scientific instruments, medical devices included, in 2024, according to DOSM figures reported by InvestPenang, and Rayson-authorised applicators work on the island and the mainland.

Can the plant keep running?

Yes, in sections, with each room handed back when the specification allows. SL120 takes foot traffic after about 18 hours and is fully cured in about five days at 30 °C; at 20 °C it needs 24 hours and seven days. Requalifying a room after the work stays with your quality team.

Solvent-free SL120 and CX90 and water-based WB58 bring no solvent odour into the building, and the order of rooms keeps dirty work out of the clean areas.

A first guide. The specification follows the room grades and the cleaning and disinfection regime your quality team sets.

What you see

The signs

  • Cracks and open joints in production room floors
  • Coating lifting at the wall base or around equipment plinths
  • Floors that stain or etch under cleaning and disinfecting agents
  • Surfaces an audit has found hard to clean
Why it happens

The usual causes

  • A thin coating over a slab that was never moisture-tested
  • Square corners and open joints that cleaning cannot reach
  • A coating chosen without checking the cleaning and disinfecting agents in use
How the job runs

From three photos to a finished job

  1. Survey the plant

Moisture and bond tests, the room grades and cleaning agents, the joints, plinths and drains, and how production runs.

  2. Specification from the maker

System by room, coves and joint details, and the data sheets for your quality file, in writing, with the programme in sections.

  3. Prepare and lay

Mechanical preparation and repairs, coves detailed, PrimeBond E20, then SL120, CX90 or PC70 at the data-sheet build, and WB58 on the walls.

  4. Cure, test, hand over

ESD floors measured after cure; data sheets and thickness records in the handover file for your quality team.

What to send

Three photos are enough for a first quotation

  1. A production room, wide, with the wall base in view
  2. The worst patch and a joint or plinth, close
  3. Area in sq ft per room, the cleaning agents, and when each room can close

What it costs

What does pharmaceutical flooring cost in Malaysia?

Per square foot, quoted after a site survey. Five things decide it: the area by room, the system for each room, the state of the slab (moisture, cracks, old coatings), the coves, joints and plinths to detail, and the section programme around production. Rayson publishes no price list; contractors with their own crews can buy the systems direct.

Who stands behind the job

  • Rayson makes the materials, writes the specification and warrants the material.
  • The Rayson-authorised applicator for your area an independent company authorised by Rayson, contracts with you, inspects, quotes, installs and warrants the workmanship.
  • Rayson is not the installer and is not a party to the installation contract. Two warranties, two companies.

The Rayson difference

An installer buys whatever is on the shelf. A Rayson-authorised applicator installs what Rayson makes.

01

The maker writes the specification

The system is specified by the company that makes the material, and installed by an independent applicator Rayson has authorised, not chosen from whatever a supplier had on the shelf that week.

02

A data sheet for every layer

Every Rayson material on your floor or roof has a published technical data sheet. You can read what went in, and so can your consultant.

03

Two warranties, two companies

Rayson warrants the material as its maker. The authorised applicator, an independent company that contracts with you, warrants the workmanship. Each warranty is issued by the company responsible for it.

04

Same materials on both sides of the Causeway

The products, data sheets and application methods are the ones Rayson publishes in Singapore. Nothing is rebadged for Malaysia.

05

Materials direct, for your own crew

Contractors and facility teams buy the same materials direct from the maker, with application guidance. The applicator is there when you want the job done for you.

The practical details

Questions people ask

Is LevelShield SL120 certified for clean rooms?

Its data sheet lists pharmaceutical facilities and clean rooms, and the floor is seamless, solvent-free and easy to clean. Rayson publishes no particle-emission certificate, so the room’s grade remains the cleanroom designer’s and the plant’s to qualify.

Can the floor take our cleaning and disinfecting agents?

SL120 is rated for medium to heavy chemical resistance and PC70 for high chemical resistance. Each agent is checked in the specification against its substance, concentration, temperature and contact time before the system is confirmed.

Do you work in medical device plants in Penang?

Yes. Rayson-authorised applicators work in Penang, on the island and the mainland, including Bayan Lepas and Batu Kawan, and in Johor and the Klang Valley; sites elsewhere are confirmed per enquiry.

Who gives the warranty?

Rayson warrants the materials as their maker; the Rayson-authorised applicator that lays the floor warrants its workmanship. Both are written into the quotation.
