What is the best floor for a school?

For classrooms, corridors and halls, a primed epoxy floor under a water-based polyurethane topcoat: Rayson specifies FloorGuard R50 under UraForce WB58, which its data sheet names for schools. Walkways, ramps and playgrounds take GripSafe AP12 anti-slip texture; toilets a SealForce WB20 membrane under the tiles.

Before you choose

Can it be done in the school holidays?

Usually, yes, planned block by block. FloorGuard R50 needs seven days to final cure, so the programme puts the classrooms early in the holiday and the walkways and toilets around them, with every area cured before the term starts.

The primer and R50 are solvent-free and WB58 is water-based, so a block can be worked on while the school office next to it stays open.

What stops children slipping?

Texture where it gets wet: GripSafe AP12 builds a quartz anti-slip texture on covered walkways, ramps and playgrounds in one product, and the FloorGuard R50 system can be broadcast with aggregate in wet areas. Rayson publishes no measured slip rating yet, so the texture is agreed in the specification and checked wet before handover.

Inside the classrooms a smooth finish is easier to clean; the texture goes where rain and wet shoes come in. Entrance halls, foyers and stairs can take IFS Japanese terrazzo, honed rather than polished for grip and laid on a base prepared with Rayson materials: an IFS product under IFS’s own terms, chosen on a sample board.

Can the playground or court be coloured?

Not with the current Malaysian range. GripSafe AP12 comes in a neutral colour, and the coloured coatings that go over it are not offered in Malaysia yet, so coloured courts and play markings are outside the range.

The survey notes which areas need colour, so the quotation is clear about what it includes and what it leaves out.

What about the toilets and the roofs?

Toilets are waterproofed under the tiles with SealForce WB20, ponding-tested before the tiles go back. Roofs that drain freely take SealForce AC10 over AP05 primer; flat roofs that pond or are walked on take SealForce RC40.

A leak into a classroom below a toilet or a roof is worth fixing in the same holiday as the floor, so the survey looks at both.

A first guide. The survey confirms the system and the holiday programme for your school.

What you see

The signs

  • Cracked or loose tiles in corridors and classrooms
  • Walkways and ramps that turn slippery in the rain
  • Water stains on ceilings below toilets
  • Worn floors where chairs and feet go most
Why it happens

The usual causes

  • Tiles and grout under daily chair traffic and mopping
  • Smooth finishes where rain and wet shoes come in
  • Toilets with no membrane under the tiles
How the job runs

From three photos to a finished job

  1. Survey the school

Blocks, what comes up, moisture and bond tests, the wet areas and roofs, and the holiday dates.

  2. Specification from the maker

System by area, anti-slip texture, toilet and roof waterproofing, and the data sheets, in writing, with the holiday programme.

  3. Prepare and lay

Old finishes removed, repairs, primer, then each system at the data-sheet build, block by block.

  4. Cure, check wet, hand over

Every area cured before the term; walkways and ramps checked wet; data sheets in your file.

What to send

Three photos are enough for a first quotation

  1. A classroom or corridor, wide
  2. The worst patch and a walkway or toilet, close
  3. Area in sq ft per block, and the holiday dates

What it costs

What does school flooring cost in Malaysia?

Per square foot, quoted after a survey. Five things decide it: the area by block, what comes up (old tiles, paint or coatings), the share that needs anti-slip texture, the toilets and roofs in the same job, and the holiday programme. Rayson publishes no price list; contractors with their own crews can buy the systems direct.

The Rayson difference

An installer buys whatever is on the shelf. A Rayson-authorised applicator installs what Rayson makes.

01

The maker writes the specification

The system is specified by the company that makes the material, and installed by an independent applicator Rayson has authorised, not chosen from whatever a supplier had on the shelf that week.

02

A data sheet for every layer

Every Rayson material on your floor or roof has a published technical data sheet. You can read what went in, and so can your consultant.

03

Two warranties, two companies

Rayson warrants the material as its maker. The authorised applicator, an independent company that contracts with you, warrants the workmanship. Each warranty is issued by the company responsible for it.

04

Same materials on both sides of the Causeway

The products, data sheets and application methods are the ones Rayson publishes in Singapore. Nothing is rebadged for Malaysia.

05

Materials direct, for your own crew

Contractors and facility teams buy the same materials direct from the maker, with application guidance. The applicator is there when you want the job done for you.

The practical details

Questions people ask

Do you work with international and private schools?

Yes, and with kindergartens and childcare centres. The applicator contracts with the school or its contractor; Rayson supplies the materials and the specification.

Can the new floor go over old tiles?

Over firmly bonded tiles, with a bonding primer, after a check that the tiles themselves are sound; a loose tile takes the new floor with it, so loose tiles come up first.

Who gives the warranty?

Rayson warrants the materials as their maker; the Rayson-authorised applicator that lays the floor warrants its workmanship. Both are written into the quotation.
