What paint is used on a basketball court?

An acrylic court coating, rolled on in at least two coats over a sound, repaired surface, then line-marked. Rayson CourtFlex AC25 is a water-based, self-crosslinking acrylic for basketball, tennis and multi-purpose courts; GripSafe AP12 adds quartz texture beneath where the court needs grip.

Before you choose

Why do courts fade, crack and turn slippery?

Sun, rain and shoes wear any court colour over the years, and water standing on the surface shortens its life; the AC25 data sheet asks for the falls and ponding to be put right before coating. Cracks and depressions show through new paint, and algae and old flaking paint make a court slippery.

That is why the work starts with repairs, not colour: failed paint, algae and contamination removed, cracks and depressions repaired, and ponding corrected, so the new coats bond to a sound, clean, dry surface.

Which courts can CourtFlex AC25 coat?

Its data sheet lists basketball, tennis and multi-purpose courts, playgrounds and recreational surfaces, on grey and decorative concrete, stone, unglazed tiles and pavers; on asphalt it goes over a GripSafe AP12 texture coat, which bonds to asphalt. Multi-purpose courts are the ones schools and housing estates use for futsal, netball, takraw and badminton outdoors.

It is not for vehicle traffic, industrial floors or chemical areas, and glazed tiles need specialist preparation first. Courts with a cushioned or synthetic surface are a different system, outside the Rayson range.

Does a court need anti-slip texture?

It depends on the sport and whether the court gets wet. Where a defined grip is needed, GripSafe AP12, a one-pack acrylic primer filler with 0.5 to 1.5 mm quartz, builds the texture before the colour coats, as both data sheets set out. Rayson publishes no measured slip rating for this build-up yet, so the texture is agreed on a sample first.

Ramps, walkways and the run-off around a court often take more texture than the playing area itself. Playgrounds can take UraForce HY15 over the AP12 texture in the colours chosen.

How long before the court can be played on?

The AC25 data sheet leaves the drying, cure and reopening times to be confirmed when the work is programmed, so the quotation states them for your weather and coats. Walkways and playgrounds finished in UraForce HY15 take light traffic 4 to 6 hours after the last coat at 25 °C.

Coats go on with the surface and air above 10 °C and at least 5 °C above the dew point, so in the monsoon the programme leaves room for the weather. A court in heavy use benefits from a planned recoat cycle to keep its colour and grip even.

A first guide. The survey confirms the repairs, texture and coats for your court.

Where it suits

The floors it suits

  • A basketball, tennis or multi-purpose court that has faded or is peeling
  • A school, condominium or housing-estate court with cracks, depressions or ponding
  • A court that turns slippery when wet or green with algae
  • A playground or walkway that needs colour and grip
  • A new concrete court that needs its colour and lines
Where it goes wrong

Why these floors fail

  • Paint laid over cracks, depressions and ponding that were never repaired
  • Algae, failed paint and dirt left under the new coats
  • Ordinary paint where a court coating was needed
  • Coats applied on a damp surface or too close to the dew point
How the floor is laid

From the bare slab to a floor in service

  1. Survey the court

The surface and its falls, the cracks, depressions and ponding, old paint and algae, the sports played, and when the court can close.

  2. Clean and repair

Failed paint, algae and contamination removed; cracks and depressions repaired and ponding corrected; the surface left sound, clean and dry.

  3. Texture and colour

GripSafe AP12 where the court needs grip, edges stripe-coated first; then at least two coats of CourtFlex AC25 by brush or roller in the court colours, dull patches given a further coat.

  4. Lines and handover

Line marking over the cured colour, then the court reopens when the specification allows; the recoat cycle is set out for courts in heavy use.

What to send

Three details are enough for a system recommendation

  1. The whole court, wide
  2. The worst cracks, ponding or peeling, close
  3. The court size and the sports played, and the town

What it costs

What does court painting cost in Malaysia?

Coated by a Rayson-authorised applicator, a court is quoted per square foot after inspection. Five things decide it: the court area, the repairs (cracks, depressions and ponding), cleaning off old paint and algae, texture where it is needed, and the number of colours and the line marking. Material ordered direct is quoted per order, by the 20-litre pail. Rayson publishes no price list.

Who stands behind the job

  • Rayson makes the materials, writes the specification and warrants the material. It supplies them direct in Malaysia through Epovex Coatings Sdn. Bhd., with the data sheets; supply and delivery are confirmed for each order.
  • The Rayson-authorised applicator for your area an independent company authorised by Rayson, contracts with you, inspects, quotes, lays the floor and warrants the workmanship. Or your own flooring contractor orders the material and lays it to the data sheet.
  • Rayson is not the installer and is not a party to the installation contract. Two warranties, two companies.

The Rayson difference

An installer buys whatever is on the shelf. A Rayson-authorised applicator installs what Rayson makes.

01

The maker writes the specification

The system is specified by the company that makes the material, and installed by an independent applicator Rayson has authorised, not chosen from whatever a supplier had on the shelf that week.

02

A data sheet for every layer

Every Rayson material on your floor or roof has a published technical data sheet. You can read what went in, and so can your consultant.

03

Two warranties, two companies

Rayson warrants the material as its maker. The authorised applicator, an independent company that contracts with you, warrants the workmanship. Each warranty is issued by the company responsible for it.

04

Same materials on both sides of the Causeway

The products, data sheets and application methods are the ones Rayson publishes in Singapore. Nothing is rebadged for Malaysia.

05

Materials direct, for your own crew

Contractors and facility teams buy the same materials direct from the maker, with application guidance. The applicator is there when you want the job done for you.

The practical details

Questions people ask

How many coats does a court need?

At least two coats of CourtFlex AC25 for an even colour and film, with dull patches given a further coat, as its data sheet sets out. Heavily used courts benefit from a planned recoat cycle to keep their colour and grip even.

Will the colour fade in the sun?

The AC25 film is non-yellowing and made for exterior use. Every court colour weathers over years of UV, so the specification plans periodic recoats to keep the colour and traction consistent.

Can our maintenance team or contractor coat the court?

Yes. AC25 is a single-component product, stirred and applied by brush or roller, and Rayson sells it direct through Rayson Malaysia (Epovex Coatings Sdn. Bhd.), with the data sheet and supply confirmed for each order, in 20-litre pails. The repairs and the falls still decide how long the court lasts.

Can AC25 go on walls and roof tiles too?

Yes: masonry and brick walls and roof tiles are listed alongside courts and decorative concrete, so the walls around a court can take the same colour.

Who gives the warranty?

Rayson warrants the material as its maker when it is laid to the data sheet; the Rayson-authorised applicator warrants its workmanship, and both are written into the quotation. A floor laid by your own contractor carries that contractor’s workmanship terms.
