Epoxy floor paint: how to apply it, and where to buy it

Rayson FloorGuard R50 epoxy floor paint and PrimeBond E20 primer, sold direct across Malaysia, with a step-by-step guide to applying it from the data sheets.

We reply within one working day, Monday to Friday.

Supplied across Malaysia through Epovex Coatings Sdn. Bhd. Rayson-authorised applicators in Johor, Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley, and Penang.

What is epoxy floor paint?

Epoxy floor paint is a two-component resin coating, mixed by weight, rolled over an epoxy primer, that hardens into a smooth, hard-wearing, easy-to-clean floor. Rayson FloorGuard R50 goes on in two coats over PrimeBond E20 and reaches its final cure in seven days.

Before you choose

How much material do I need?

FloorGuard R50 goes on at 0.3 to 0.5 kg/m² a coat in two coats, so one 20 kg set covers about 20 to 33 m² of floor. PrimeBond E20 primer covers 6 to 8 m² per kg, and one 20 kg set primes about 120 to 160 m².

For example, a 40 m² garage (about 430 sq ft) needs 24 to 40 kg of R50, two sets, and 5 to 7 kg of primer. The primer set is far more than a small garage needs, so give the area when you order and Rayson works out the quantities for you.

Is epoxy floor paint the same as ordinary floor paint?

No. Ordinary paint dries as its solvent evaporates; epoxy is two components mixed by weight, FloorGuard R50 at 4:1, that harden by chemical reaction. Once mixed it must be used within 30 minutes at 30 °C.

That is why it is mixed with a mechanical mixer for 2 to 3 minutes, by weight rather than by eye, and only as much as can be rolled out in that time. A wrong mix never cures fully.

Can I put epoxy paint on my car porch?

On a covered porch or in a garage, yes. On a porch open to the sun, no: the R50 data sheet says it is not for exterior UV-exposed surfaces, because epoxy yellows and chalks outdoors.

For an open porch, ask when you order; Rayson suggests another system for outside surfaces, and the applicator can look at it.

Can epoxy paint go over tiles?

Not with this system. PrimeBond E20 is made for concrete, screed, sound old epoxy, asphalt and prepared metal, not glazed tiles. An epoxy floor over tiles needs a bonding primer and an applicator.

For a home floor over firmly bonded tiles, a Rayson-authorised applicator lays an IFS flake or metallic finish over a bonding primer, with the build-up confirmed on a sample board.

Do it yourself?

When the material alone is enough

  • A garage, store room or workshop indoors or under a roof
  • A sound concrete floor at least 28 days old, dry to the touch
  • Cars, trolleys and foot traffic, not forklifts
  • A weekend to prepare, coat and let it cure
Where it goes wrong

Why it fails, and when to call the applicator

  • Rolled straight onto dusty, oily or unground concrete
  • A slab that was still wet, so the coating blisters
  • Mixed by eye instead of by weight, so it never cures fully
  • Laid outdoors in the sun, where epoxy yellows and chalks
How to apply it

Step by step, from the data sheets

  1. Check the slab

Concrete at least 28 days old, moisture 5% or less, no rising damp; a plastic sheet taped down overnight is a first check, and condensation under it means wait. Mix and cure between 10 °C and 35 °C.

  2. Prepare

Grind the concrete clean and open, remove oil and old paint, repair cracks and vacuum all the dust; the data sheet asks for a sound surface, at least 1.5 N/mm² in a pull-off test.

  3. Prime with PrimeBond E20

Mix parts A and B at 2:1 by weight with a mixer for 2 to 3 minutes, roll at 6 to 8 m² per kg, and use within 30 minutes at 30 °C.

  4. Two coats of FloorGuard R50

Mix 4:1 by weight for 2 to 3 minutes, roll 0.3 to 0.5 kg/m² a coat, the second coat within the time the data sheet gives; broadcast aggregate into the first coat on ramps for grip. Final cure in seven days.

How to order

Three details are enough to order

  1. The floor area in square metres or square feet
  2. What runs on it, and whether it is indoors or in the sun
  3. Your town for delivery, and a photo of the floor

What it costs

What does epoxy floor paint cost?

Materials are quoted per order, by the set: tell Rayson the area and the floor, and you get the number of FloorGuard R50 and PrimeBond E20 sets, the coverage and the price, with supply and delivery confirmed for your order. Applied by a Rayson-authorised applicator, it is quoted per square foot after inspection instead. Rayson publishes no price list.

The Rayson difference

An installer buys whatever is on the shelf. A Rayson-authorised applicator installs what Rayson makes.

01

The maker writes the specification

The system is specified by the company that makes the material, and installed by an independent applicator Rayson has authorised, not chosen from whatever a supplier had on the shelf that week.

02

A data sheet for every layer

Every Rayson material on your floor or roof has a published technical data sheet. You can read what went in, and so can your consultant.

03

Two warranties, two companies

Rayson warrants the material as its maker. The authorised applicator, an independent company that contracts with you, warrants the workmanship. Each warranty is issued by the company responsible for it.

04

Same materials on both sides of the Causeway

The products, data sheets and application methods are the ones Rayson publishes in Singapore. Nothing is rebadged for Malaysia.

05

Materials direct, for your own crew

Contractors and facility teams buy the same materials direct from the maker, with application guidance. The applicator is there when you want the job done for you.

Questions people ask

Can I buy Rayson epoxy now?

Yes. Order through Rayson Malaysia (Epovex Coatings Sdn. Bhd.) by WhatsApp or the form; supply and delivery are confirmed for each order, with the data sheets.

When can I drive on it?

The data sheets give a final cure of seven days. Rayson or the applicator tells you when the floor can take cars in your conditions; in cool weather it takes longer.

Is it safe to apply at home?

Ventilate the space, wear gloves and eye protection, keep children and pets away while it cures, and follow the safety data sheet that comes with the material.

Can it go over old paint or old epoxy?

Over sound, well-bonded old epoxy, yes, after grinding: PrimeBond E20 lists sound existing epoxy flooring. Over ordinary floor paint, no: grind it off to the concrete.

Who gives the warranty?

Rayson warrants the material as its maker when it is applied to the data sheet. A do-it-yourself job carries no workmanship warranty; an applicator’s job does.
