Rayson PrimeBond E20

Rayson PrimeBond E20 is a two-component, medium-viscosity, solvent-free epoxy bonding primer that anchors resin floor systems to concrete, screed, asphalt and prepared metal — on dry or damp substrates.

Best for

Best for priming concrete and cementitious screeds before Rayson epoxy and polyurethane floor systems, including slabs that cannot be fully dried out.

PrimeBond E20 is the workhorse primer of the Rayson range. A medium-viscosity, solvent-free two-component epoxy, it penetrates mechanically prepared substrates and forms the adhesion bridge that the rest of the floor system depends on. In pull-off testing on properly prepared concrete, bond strength exceeds the cohesive strength of the concrete itself — failure occurs in the substrate, not the primer.

The formulation tolerates damp (though not wet) surfaces, which matters on ground-bearing slabs and in tropical conditions where full drying is rarely practical. It also handles new concrete, existing epoxy floors, cementitious screeds, asphalt and mechanically prepared metal, making it the default first coat across most Rayson floor build-ups.

Because it is solvent-free, PrimeBond E20 is suitable for use in enclosed and poorly ventilated areas — basements, plant rooms and occupied buildings — where solvent-based primers would be ruled out.

Key benefits

  • Solvent-free — usable in unventilated and enclosed areas
  • Applies to dry or damp surfaces
  • Excellent adhesion to mechanically prepared substrates — bond strength exceeds concrete cohesion
  • Compatible base for Rayson epoxy and polyurethane floor systems

Recommended uses

  • Priming new and existing concrete before Rayson floor coatings
  • Priming cementitious screeds, including highly absorbent substrates
  • Priming over sound existing epoxy flooring before recoating
  • Priming asphalt surfaces before compatible overlays
  • Priming mechanically prepared metal surfaces

Application

  1. Roller
  2. Brush
  3. Airless spray
SpecificationData sheet value
Coverage6–8 m² per kg per coat, varying with substrate condition and porosity
MixingTwo pre-weighed parts, mix ratio 2:1 (A:B) by weight; mix mechanically for at least 2–3 minutes; pot life up to 30 minutes at 30 °C
Drying and curingFinal cure 7 days
Pack sizesPart A 13.34 kg can + Part B 6.66 kg can

Typical systems

Standard epoxy floor system

  1. Mechanically prepare and vacuum the substrate
  2. Prime with Rayson PrimeBond E20
  3. Apply Rayson LevelShield SL120 self-levelling body coat

Repair-then-coat system

  1. Prime with Rayson PrimeBond E20
  2. Reinstate defects with Rayson MortarBond EM90 epoxy mortar
  3. Overcoat with the specified Rayson floor finish

Limitations

  • Minimum substrate temperature 5 °C; curing between +10 °C and +35 °C
  • Substrate moisture content must not exceed 5% — damp is acceptable, standing water is not
  • Mixed material must be used within its pot life; cures faster in hot weather and in large batches
  • Not a wearing surface — must be overcoated with a Rayson body coat or finish

Not suitable for

  • Use as a finished wearing surface without an overcoat
  • Substrates with standing water or moisture content above 5%
  • Slabs with active rising damp or hydrostatic pressure without a specialist barrier system
  • UV-exposed surfaces left uncoated — epoxy will yellow and chalk outdoors

The practical details

Rayson PrimeBond E20: questions people ask

Can PrimeBond E20 be applied to damp concrete?

Yes — it is formulated for dry or damp substrates, provided there is no standing water and substrate moisture does not exceed 5%. For slabs above that, or with active moisture ingress, speak to our technical team before specifying.

Do I always need a primer under a Rayson floor coating?

In almost all cases, yes. The primer seals porosity, prevents pinholing in the body coat and provides the adhesion the whole system relies on. Skipping it is the most common cause of coating failure.

How soon can the next coat go on?

The primer must be firm enough to walk on but still within its overcoat window. Confirm exact recoat times with our technical team for your programme.

Is it safe to use in enclosed spaces?

PrimeBond E20 is solvent-free and stated as suitable for unventilated areas. Standard PPE and good working practice still apply; consult the SDS once available.

What surface preparation is required?

Mechanical preparation — captive shot blasting, milling or diamond grinding — to a sound, open, dust-free surface. Weak concrete must be removed, defects filled, and all dust vacuumed off before priming.

Can it go over an old epoxy floor?

Yes, provided the existing coating is sound and well bonded. Abrade the surface, clean thoroughly and carry out an adhesion trial first.
